Here she is settled in after a long, hard day, being a great mom.

If Wonder looks a little tired, there’s a reason for that. It was a challenge for these little gremlins to arrive. Three of them were really huge for whippet puppies and it was work to get them into the world.

Puppies have temporary names for the time they live with us before joining their new families. These little ones are all named after trees – the sire’s call name is Oakley.

The only girl in the forest:

“Holly” weighed in at 12.5 ounces. A nice, healthy  size for a puppy. She is a fawn, with a pretty blaze whippet puppy

Several species of these evergreens are cultivated as ornamentals for their distinctive foliage and red or black fruits, which persist into winter and are popular Christmas decorations.

The four male trees:

whippet puppy “Aspen” is an Irish marked fawn brindle. His brindle stripes are widely spaced, giving him the look of a fawn with black etching.

Trembling aspen trees are also known as quaking aspen, golden aspen and white poplar. This deciduous tree belongs to the willow family. Its name originates from the lightweight shiny leaves that quake and tremble when moved by even the gentlest breeze.

“Acorn” – there is the saying that the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree. He is marked just like his sire.

The oak tree is part of the beech family, a large genus with over 200 species, most of which are found in the Northern Hemisphere. Native oaks are found in different habitats, from swamps to dry land in higher elevations. The oak is a slow-growing, long-lived tree that sheds acorns to repopulate.

“Maple” is a handsome dark Irish marked brindle. That wide blaze is going to give him a scrumptious head.

Maple, any of a large genus (about 200 species) of shrubs or trees in the family Sapindaceae, widely distributed in the North Temperate Zone but concentrated in China. Maples constitute one of the most important groups of ornamentals for planting in lawns, along streets, and in parks. In the fall their leaves turn a vivid red.

“Butternut” was almost the game breaker, weighing 15.6 ounces. Say his name “Buddanut” with a southern tone for the full effect.

The butternut tree is a small to medium deciduous tree that can grow up to 40-60 feet tall. The dark green leaves are covered in hairs and are arranged in leaflets that grow to around 10-20 inches long. The bark of the butternut is light gray in color.
