Cipher with puppies

I just can’t help it. You can laugh, but I have been possessed by our detached garage for the past six weeks and can’t think of anything for names except the myriad items burned into my retina by cleaning it out. I’m up to 60 hours so far, but it is coming together. It is 24 x 36, or 864 square feet, the size of a small one bedroom apartment and it’s been ignored for 30 years.

It was filled with boxes, bags and bins of stuff, very little of it on shelves or organized in any way. Each box or bin was a new treasure trove because you never knew what would be in it. Any random box could have fishing lures, a baseball hat, tools, nails and screws, small hand tools, camping supplies, TOOLS, duct tape, books, golf balls and tees, TOOLS, plumbing supplies, shelf brackets, TOOLS, gloves, paint, RV connectors, camping gear or light bulbs all mixed together. And, did I mention TOOLS?

Puppies have temporary names for the time they live with us before joining their new families. What can I say – all these names relate to the bottomless pit that is this garage project from Hades.

“Tim” How can you talk about garages and tools and not have Tim, “the tool man Taylor” from Home Improvement? Unless of course, you are too young to remember the series…

“Whatsit” As in “What the heck is this? I ran into a million items that I had no clue what they even were. Hard to organize things into categories when you don’t  know what it is.

“Jigaw” – How many jigsaws does one person need to own? I’m pretty sure Mark is over the limit.

And here are the little “Garagettes” – you know, like if the Rockettes ever appeared on Tool Time.

“Siren” We have an air horn. An air horn is often used as a siren, hence her name. In this part of the world, an air horn is used to signal the Aerial Lift Bridge in the Duluth Harbor that you’d like it to go up so you can pass underneath. We have never owned any watercraft other than a canoe. Why do we have an air horn?

“Gotta”  As in “you gotta be kidding me – why would we have one of these?” Or, “you gotta be kidding me – I didn’t know we had one of these!” There was a lot of that going on over the past six weeks.

“Novella”  – If anyone remembers the Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, they were a collection of 4-5  full length books abridged into  shorter stories, or novellas, and combined into one hard cover book. One 30 year old box revealed a whole assortment of them.
